Get ya baps out, or not…it’s up to you

“I can’t think of any better representation of beauty than someone who is unafraid to be herself.” ~ Emma Stone

Feminism to me is equality and I can confidently preach that I am a feminist on this basis.

Although this is absolutely true, you won’t catch me burning my bra anytime soon. This doesn’t mean that that I don’t realise what the strong independent women fought for in the late 19th and early 20th century, their resilience and determination for equal rights is truly inspiring. I have no doubt that us ladies wouldn’t be living like we do today without the fights that the likes of Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst put up to make women’s voices heard. But for me, equality in modern day society is the acceptance of women doing what they please when it comes to their bodies. If that means women choosing to embrace their femininity by showing off a bit of boob, I think that should be just as okay as a woman who wants to embrace her femininity by growing her armpit hair.

Modern day society teaches women to be strong, confident and not to take any bull s**t from men, which is great! Yet it’s often the case that when women choose to do photoshoots that, for example, don’t leave a lot to the imagination, or alternatively don’t portray themselves as feminine enough, they receive the wrath of modern day society with backlash that circulates via the media. Will women ever just be able to embrace their bodies as they wish without anyone passing comment?!

Take for example Emma Watson’s photoshoot for Vanity Fair. The picture below is one of many, however this particular photo is showing a little bit of Emma Watson boob — SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! The actress and feminist received backlash for doing this shoot to which she responded:

“Feminism is about giving women choice, Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with. It’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality. I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it.”

Preach it Watson!

Alternatively take Julia Roberts and her very famous, hairy appearance at the premiere of Notting Hill in 1999. Roberts was one of the first to sport a little bit of underarm hair and the amount of publicity she got was quite something. That wasn’t very clean and feminine of her was it?! Disgusting even?! (Oh please…).

You’d think people would have moved on by now, surely… Nope, recently Lourdes Leon, Madona’s eldest daughter, has reignited the debate on armpit hair when she was seen sunning herself in Miami with a tiny bit of pit hair on show. Internet trolls made comments like “shave them pits girl” and “Is this a new trend? Cuz I’m not in it”.

Watson’s, Roberts’ and Leon’s decisions on how to embrace their femininity are different but absolutely okay. We live in the 21st century, women should be allowed to be women, embrace their femininity, and show what they want of their bodies without being judged. That’s if they want to of course, if they don’t that’s also fine! Surely true feminism, true freedom, is the acceptance of women doing what they want with their bodies? Us girls shouldn’t be expected to act in a certain way because living up to stereotypical female expectations sucks, and that’s enough of a reason for us not to!

The point I’m preaching here is ladies, do what the hell you want with your bodies, grow your armpit hair or get your tits out, as long as you feel fabulous that really is all that matters.
